Pet Sitters Don't Just Sit!

Author: V.Witt

Do you know that Pet sitters offer an option that often works out as the best solution for Rover's care while you are away from home?

The simple truth is your dog does not like to be left alone anymore than you like leaving him! Be it a day, a week or "heavens" even longer. What will make his life a lot less stressful on these occasions, and give you peace of mind, is the presence of a pet sitter who can play with him, walk him, feed him and generally make him happy.

And who doesn't want to come home to a happy dog snoring peacefully because his needs have been met. Not to mention, a house that isn't torn up because Rover got bored and lonely.

On another note, not all dogs enjoy going on trips. Oh, I know they may appear enthusiastic and eager at the outset, but this behavior can turn into restless anxiety as a car ride becomes a journey into unfamiliar territory. And Rover may wish you'd left him at home where he feels safe.

While it's nice if you have a friend or neighbor who will pop in on your dog while you are away, if there is any kind of emergency, you'll pat yourself on the back for having hired a qualified pet sitter to take charge.

Another comforting part about hiring pet sitters is that you won't have to break the mold and confuse your dog's day-to-day routine. Things will stay pretty much the same, including his food and the time of day he is used to eating. You know, the important stuff!

A dog sitter visits on a regular schedule to feed and walk your dog. Or, if you wish, can actually stay in your home to make it look occupied when you are gone for extended periods. Some caretakers also offer pricing options that include taking care of a few chores as well. It's your choice.

So what are the top reasons, dog owners consider pet sitters?

One of the most obvious reasons, is that you like to take road trips and Rover has a problem with motion sickness. He also finds boarding facilities stressful places to hang out while you are gone.

But let's suppose...

  • You have a busy job with irregular hours
  •
  • You don't like to leave your dog alone even for short periods because he is old, or not in the best of health
  • Your dog is a homebody
  • Your health is frail and you need a regular dog walker
  • You like the idea of combining pet sitting with house sitting, which some services offer

Do any of those circumstances resonate with you?

Where to Find Pet Sitters, House Sitters, Dog Walkers & More: Many "independent" pet sitters can be found through your vet's referral. As part of your review process, you'll definitely want to check their references and also find out if they have taken the extra step of acquiring a professional certification.

Another route is through agencies where sitters have registered and listed their qualifications, availability, location, experience, references, and pricing. This can all be done in a very confidential manner.

Some agencies also offer a complete range of complimentary services including nannies, elder care, house sitters and dog walkers. This might be attractive to you if you have an elderly relative living with you who also needs some help while you're gone.

So, next time your dog needs a caretaker for whatever reason, don't overlook the convenient option of pet sitters. Once you have a few pre-screened individuals, you could try one of them out for just a short term hire to see how your dog enjoys the experience.

How To Stop Snoring Naturally

Author: Peter Lenkefi

If you suffer from snoring, you are not only missing out on a quality night's sleep, but your family's rest may be disrupted as well. The question facing many sufferers is not what causes snoring so much but, rather, they want to know how to stop snoring completely.

There are a lot of ways that you can stop snoring. From the simplest ways to the more drastic approach, don't give up hope on getting a good night's sleep. If you have recently started snoring, try sleeping on your side instead of your back. Experts believe that individuals who sleep on their back suffer from having their air passages blocked when the fatty tissue rests in the back of their throat and causes snoring. If you worry about turning back over through the night, use a large body pillow and press it up against your back. If you try to roll over when sleeping on your side, the pillow will deter this movement and may help to curb that snoring problem. If you find that you are still struggling with the nighttime nuisance, visit your local retail store and check out the bedding section. Browse around and see if you can find a pillow that is specifically designed to help stop snoring.

If sleeping on your side or enlisting the help of a special pillow doesn't provide any relief from snoring, consider the possibility that you may suffer from allergies. If you know this to be true, begin doing everything possible to rid your home or allergens, including dust, pet hair and cigarette smoke. In addition, you should probably use a quality air filtration device in every room and especially in the bedroom. You will need to change the filters regularly and will be surprised to see the dust that the filter will contain. Allergy sufferers and people with various sinus problems are more prone to snoring because the nasal passages in their throat and nose may become blocked very easily. This causes difficulty breathing, which may lead to snoring.

Individuals who suffer from obesity are also more likely to experience snoring. If you, or someone that you know, has been diagnosed with obesity, consider working with a physician to create a medically supervised diet and exercise program.

The Sleep Genie, a revolutionary new product, allows sleepers to support their jaw during sleep. Experts believe that, if the individual who snores were to have a way to keep their mouth closed during the night, snoring would no longer be an issue. That is where the Sleep Genie starts to work comfortably and eliminate snoring possibly as early as the first use.

Which Stop Snoring Device Is Most Effective?

Author: Sean Taylor

There are many wild theories, old wives tales and websites giving left-field advice regarding the topic of snoring and how to stop it. It's one of those unique afflictions that the sufferer often doesn't realize they have, simply because they are asleep at the time! One possible cure for snoring that is often overlooked, simply because there is a social preconception that we will feel and look silly utilizing it, is to use a stop snoring device.

These special devices range in format, application and cost and as there are a variety of these aids available, it enables you to utlize the most suitable solution for you. Some people are averse to surgery and so this is not a realistic option, whereas others are so frustrated at their affliction, that they will try just about anything. This article will to look at some of the options available.

Cost Effective Options

The first option to consider is by far and away the most inexpensive stop snoring device that we are going to discuss; nasal strips.

Nasal strips can be bought from chemists, pharmacies or online retailers and they are placed across the bridge of the nose, just above the nostrils. They work by pulling at and therefore expanding the nostrils, which in turn makes it easier to breath through the nose. Opening up the airways in the nose, reduces the chance of the person having to breathe through their mouth, which very often means a reduction in snoring.

A device called the mouth piece is our next choice and is a little more expensive than the nasal strips. Once again this stop snoring device can be bought from chemists, pharmacies or specialist suppliers and there are numerous testimonials from people who have used them. This device is very similar to the gum shields that are worn by boxers and other sportsmen, except the device fits to both the top and bottom set of teeth.

They are manufactured from a material which becomes pliable when heated (normally in warm water), enabling the device to mould around the wearer's teeth. The mouth piece works by gently repositioning the person's lower jaw, therefore opening the airway at the back of the throat. It also pushes the lower jaw slightly forward, which stops the soft tissue in the throat from vibrating, in turn halting your snoring.

If there is one stop snoring device that most people are reluctant to try, it is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. The reason for this apparent reluctance is because the device consists of a face mask, humidifier and tubing, so it is not particularly comfortable to wear. It can also make your bedroom resemble a hospital room, with the mask being attached to your teeth and the tube providing a continuous supply of pressurized humidified air into the mouth. This piece of equipment can be very effective, as it stops the upper airway from collapsing and is often used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. It is however, at the upper end of the cost bracket.

Seek Help From The Professionals

Dentists can provide you with a similar stop snoring device to a mouth piece called a dental implant. These are custom made for you and work on the same principle as the mouth piece, but are often made from metal or acrylic. They differ from the mouth piece as they of course are 'made to measure' and they will take into account your dental history. As you would expect, these devices are more expensive, but often people prefer this option as a medical practitioner is overseeing it.

In recent years, a new procedure has emerged that has proved to be a very effective stop snoring device, although strictly speaking it isn't a device as such. The palatal implantation has shown promising results for curing snoring and is performed under local anesthesia. Little plastic implants (less than an inch long) are inserted into the soft palate, ensuring your mouth is always kept in the correct position. Once you start to heal from the procedure, scar tissue begins to build up around these tiny implants. This causes the tissue of the soft palate to become stiff, causing the vibrations that cause snoring to stop. As this is technically a cosmetic procedure, it is quite expensive and is not covered by many (if any) insurance plans.

So in summary, choosing the most suitable stop snoring device is really a question of personal preference and affordability. It is also advisable for anyone who is considering devices or treatment for snoring to consult their doctor. They will be able to advise on an individual basis, what they feel may be the most suitable approach.

Causes of Macular Degeneration and Treatment of Macular Degeneration

Author: peterhutch

Macular degeneration is a medical condition predominantly found in elderly adults in which the center of the inner lining of the eye, known as the macula area of the retina, suffers thinning, atrophy, and in some cases, bleeding. This can result in loss of central vision, which entails inability to see fine details, to read, or to recognize faces.

AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail. It does not hurt, but it causes cells in the macula to die. In some cases, AMD advances so slowly that people notice little change in their vision. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes. Regular comprehensive eye exams can detect macular degeneration before the disease causes vision loss. Treatment can slow vision loss. It does not restore vision.

What are the symptoms?

Both dry and wet AMD cause no pain.

For dry AMD: the most common early sign is blurred vision. As fewer cells in the macula are able to function, people will see details less clearly in front of them, such as faces or words in a book. Often this blurred vision will go away in brighter light. If the loss of these light-sensing cells becomes great, people may see a small--but growing--blind spot in the middle of their field of vision.

Macular Degeneration Causes

Age: The likelihood to develop macular degeneration increases with age.

Race: Macular degeneration is more common in whites but occurs in all races.

Gender: Women seem to be at greater risk

Macular degeneration can be inherited. I can also occur in juveniles (juvenile macular degeneration) and may not necessarily be associated with the aging process. Occasionally, injury, infection or inflammation can also damage the delicate tissue of the macula.

The choroid is an underlying layer of blood vessels that nourishes the cones and rods of the retina. A layer of tissue forming the outermost surface of the retina is called the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The RPE is a critical passageway for nutrients from the choroid to the retina and helps remove waste products from the retina to the choroid.

Macular Degeneration Treatment

There is no specific treatment for dry macular degeneration, although zinc supplements may slow the progression of the disease (see zinc in diet).

Laser photocoagulation (laser surgery to stop the leaking in choroidal blood vessels) may be useful in the early stages of the wet form of the disease. It involves the use of a thermal laser, which burns the abnormal, leaky blood vessels and stops them from spreading.

If exudative AMD is untreated, vision typically deteriorates substantially, often to blindness. However, peripheral vision is usually retained. Results of treatment depend on the size, location, and type of neovascularization. Thermal laser photocoagulation of neovascularization outside the fovea may prevent severe vision loss. Photodynamic therapy, a laser treatment, provides benefit under specific circumstances.

Both eyes are usually affected, although one eye may be affected before the other. The good eye usually compensates for the affected eye and for many years this can disguise the fact that there’s a problem. There's no pain or redness of the eyes.

A “cold laser” is then shone into the eye which activates the drug stopping the new blood vessels from growing and helping to prevent them causing too much damage to the macular area. This treatment is available on the NHS and has been shown to be effective for many people with “wet” AMD. It can help stop the “wet” AMD progressing to its worst stages though more than one treatment may be needed.

Flu – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Author: peterhutch

Influenza (say: in-floo-en-zah) is also called the flu. It's an infection that causes fever, chills, cough, body aches, headaches, and sometimes earaches or sinus problems. The flu is caused by the influenza virus (say: vy-rus). A virus is a microorganism (say: my-croh-or-gah-nih-zum), which means it's so small that you can't see it without a strong microscope.

Flu Causes

Somewhere between day 2 and day 4 of the illness, the "whole body" symptoms begin to subside, and respiratory symptoms begin to increase. The flu virus can settle anywhere in the respiratory tract, producing symptoms of a cold, croup, sore throat, bronchiolitis, ear infection, or pneumonia.

Flu Symptoms

Symptoms of influenza can start quite suddenly one to two days after infection. Usually the first symptoms are chills or a chilly sensation, but fever is also common early in the infection, with body temperatures as high as 39 °C (approximately 103 °F). Many people are so ill that they are confined to bed for several days, with aches and pains throughout their bodies, which are worse in their backs and legs.[1] Symptoms of influenza may include:

Body aches, especially joints and throat

Coughing and sneezing

Extreme coldness and fever

Although nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can sometimes accompany influenza infection, especially in children, gastrointestinal symptoms are rarely prominent. The term "stomach flu" is a misnomer that is sometimes used to describe gastrointestinal illnesses caused by other microorganisms.

Preventing Seasonal Flu: Get Vaccinated

The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. There are two types of vaccines:

The "flu shot" – an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle. The flu shot is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

The nasal-spray flu vaccine – a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu (sometimes called LAIV for “Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine”). LAIV is approved for use in healthy* people 2-49 years of age† who are not pregnant.

Flu Diagnosis

You can usually diagnose flu yourself based on the characteristic of your symptoms. It is unusual for any other diagnostic tests to be necessary unless there are complications.

Your GP cannot normally say exactly which virus is causing your flu-like symptoms. The main role of laboratory diagnosis is to identify the main circulating types and strains of the flu virus.

Treatment of Flu

Usually, you'll need nothing more than bed rest and plenty of fluids to treat the flu. But in some cases, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza).

These drugs, which treat both influenza A and B, work by deactivating an enzyme the virus needs to grow and spread. If taken soon after you notice symptoms, they may shorten your illness by a day or so.

Relenza ™ (Zanamir): This is a novel new drug only approved in the summer of 1999. It is an inhaled nasal spray that acts in the lungs, at the site of primary infection. In addition to treating the influenza type A and B, it successfully prevented flu in four out of five healthy family members who lived with someone already infected with flu.

What Snoring Solution can Work for You?

Author: Diego Nieves

Do you fully understand what snoring is? How does one go about a snoring problem? Among the different snoring solution options available, which one can work well for you?

Let us begin with understanding what snoring is in order for you to be able to determine the necessary snoring solution that will become the most effective option to take for your problem. A person is prone to snoring if he or she experiences an unstable flow of air when breathing as a result of blocked airways in the mouth and nose much of which is due to the presence of limited space for the air to pass through. As air enters the body, having only a small space to pass through results in the vibration of the tissues producing a snoring sound.

Any person can develop a snoring problem whatever lifestyle he or she may have as this is a relatively common condition for people. Snoring can be a problem for anyone yet aging and further weight gain can add to the possibility of the condition manifesting in most people. You can attain a snoring solution easily as the availability of these treatments have entered the market due to the rate of snoring problems occurring at rates of forty five percent for men and thirty percent for women.

Snoring is primarily attributed to the natural occurrence by which throat muscles contract when we lie down leading to a narrower path for air to pass through therefore causing vibrations in the mouth to happen. But what are the effects of a snoring problem and why is there a need for a proper snoring solution to be applied in this situation? Snoring can develop into complications bringing forth additional problems such as sleep deprivation, irritability, loss of focus, and even decreased libido for some.

There has been studies and actual results linking snoring with heart attacks and strokes in some people. Snoring can affect a person by means of psychological and emotional factors as well. The lack of sleep for both partners due to a snoring condition can cause problems within the relationship therefore a snoring solution is vital in this particular situation.

Other than sleeping position and the like, the simplest snoring solution lies in the concept of getting enough sleep and balancing your day well enough so as not to tire yourself and cause fatigue which can add to the probability of a snoring problem. It is also important to be mindful of your activities before sleeping and make sure to reduce your consumption of alcohol and cigarettes at this time. Weight is also something you must balance out since it can affect snoring in the same way it does with other bodily functions.

The quandary lies in the fact if a particular snoring solution is working for the patient or not in terms of its effectiveness in decreasing the occurrences if not completely eliminating the snoring problem itself. Determining how well a specific treatment works depends on how well your snoring symptoms have been cleared; are you sleeping better at night or not? Have some patience when you look for ways to alleviate your symptoms but rest assured that there will always be something that can help your condition.

A snoring solution can be obtained through multiple sources considering that you know your condition well enough. Be aware of your snoring problem and do not be afraid to go to a professional if a more complex approach might be necessary. Enjoy relaxation and rejuvenation as you have a good night's sleep free from the hassles of snoring.

Tonsil Stones? What Exactly are Tonsil Stones (tonsilloliths)?

Author: John Reece

What exactly are Tonsil Stones? We know they are small cream colored lumps which are coughed up or swallowed and may become a nuisance by giving the sensation of having something stuck in the back of the throat. But what exactly are they?

Studies have shown them to be made up of dead skin cells, food particles, sulfur-producing bacteria, saliva and dead white blood cells. This debris collects in crevices formed in the tonsil region, which eventually produces the tonsil stones. I don't know how long they take to form and grow to their full size, as I have found no research that covers this, but they do vary in size which obviously has some bearing on the length of time they take to grow before finally dislodging and falling out.

If you ever break open or squash one of the stones between your fingers they give off a very unpleasant smell. In fact it is so unpleasant that they smell a bit like rotten eggs and vomit all rolled into one. The tonsil stones contain quantities of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptain, which are major contributors towards producing these awful, smells and are the very same gases that create many bad breath problems.Tonsil stones only tend to form in people who still have their tonsils, but if you are thinking of rushing off to have them surgically removed then think again. As we get older having our tonsils removed (tonsillectomy) becomes more risky and many physicians will not contemplate removing them unless you have a more serious problem that warrants their removal. Tonsil Stones are not considered to be a health risk and therefore are not deemed serious enough to be operated on.

Luckily, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to remove Tonsil Stones without the need for surgery. What you require is something, which can effectively act against the sulfur-producing bacteria that live on the back of the tongue and in your tonsil region. There is a range of special oral products available to neutralize these bacteria and stop tonsil stones and bad breath smells dead in their tracks. By using these special oxygenating toothpastes, mouthwashes and mouth sprays along with the use of a tongue scraper will be a very effective way of significantly reducing or completely stopping tonsil stones from ever forming again.

Tonsilloliths is not something you should put up with, as there is effective treatment on hand, which can put a stop to your persistent problem. With a little effort from you and a small change to your daily oral routine can produce outstanding results by giving you a fresh, clean feeling with a good likelihood of eliminating tonsil stones and bad breath forever.
