· High blood pressure

· Stroke

· Arrhythmia

In addition, sleep apnea sufferers are liable to experience a number of psychological effects, including:

· Loss of short-term memory

· Severe anxiety

Diagnosis of sleep apnea is performed by the use of a polysomnogram. A polysomnogram is a comprehensive test of the way you sleep. It monitors:

· Brain activity (via an electroencephalogram (EEG))

· Air flow, chest and abdomen movement

· Continuous oxygen saturation

· Chin and leg movements

· Eye movements and the onset of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep

· Heart rate and rhythm

By monitoring all these elements simultaneously, the polysomnogram can definitively establish whether you suffer from sleep apnea or not by identifying the number of breathing interruptions you suffer during your sleep. It can tell the amount of time you spend in stage 1, 2,3, and 4 sleep, as well as the amount of time you spend in REM sleep. For diagnosing all sleep problems, the polysomnogram is the gold standard of tests, but it does require an overnight stay in the laboratory.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common condition in which breathing stops during sleep. As your body realizes it is suffocating, it wakens partially, which restores airflow, but disrupts sleep. Both parts of sleep apnea are harmful--reduced oxygen supply can lead to high blood pressure and increased risk of heart failure as the heart tries to compensate for low oxygen saturation. Sleep disruption decreases the amount of rest a person receives, reducing the level of rest a person receives during sleep.

Sleep Apnea Surgical Risks

According to studies, surgical patients with sleep apnea face highly increased risks. These risks are described as being periopoerative, meaning that they occur not only during surgery, but also following surgery and throughout recovery.

· Adverse response to anesthesia including apneic events where the waking response is inhibited, which can lead to dangerously low oxygen levels

· Oxygen starvation of the heart

· Necessity of mechanical ventilation

· Cardiac arrest

· Congestive heart failure

· Coma

· Death

In all, people with untreated sleep apnea have double the risk of perioperative complications and triple the risk of serious complications. And patients with untreated sleep apnea have, on average, 33 % longer hospital stays than other patients.

Get Tested

Although the rate for sleep apnea in the general population is only 2-4 %, studies found that as many as 19 % of the adult surgical population suffer from sleep apnea. The increase is due to the serious health complications resulting from sleep apnea, making sufferers disproportionately represented in the surgical population. Although many hospitals now pre-screen all surgical patients for sleep apnea, the screening tools are cursory and may not catch you. If you suffer from any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, such as daytime sleepiness, wake feeling poorly rested, experience excessive moodiness, or have difficulty with memory or cognitive tasks, you should consider being screened for sleep apnea before any surgery.

* Finally, when it comes to alignment (the largest of factors of snoring), sleeping on one's back makes one much more likely to snore at night as the tongue and jaw are forced down to the back of the mouth by gravity.

Unfortunately snoring and sleep apnea can occur in anybody, in any age group, and of any sex, and can be very disruptive to partners. Most people who snore do not have any serious medical condition and often do not wake.
Because of the disruption to our partners sleep we often feel we should make the effort to look for treatments for snoring and sleep apnea.

There are several ways to overcome snoring and sleep apnea.

1. Surgically. There are many procedures that can be carried out. The more common surgeries performed are Laser-Assited Uvulopalatatoplasty where simple surgery removes tissue from the back of the throat. Tracheostomy: This is only performed in severe cases due to undesirable side-effects. Radiofreqency Ablation; Treatment is efficetive for mild obstructive sleep apnea. Uvulopalatophryngoplasty which removes tissue and uvula from the back of the throat thus increasing the total width of your throat. Diathermy Palatoplasty again removes tissue from the back of your throat and only requires local anesthesia. The removal of tonsils and adenoids offers some relief to children.

2. Nasal sprays. In some people, snoring is brought on by allergies. Individuals can react very severely to common triggers such as pollen, tree cutting, cut grass, winter cold dry air, smog and a whole host of indoor allergens including cat fur, house dust mites, and just a general lack of fresh air. Snoring in these people is most commonly due to nasal congestion because of the airway reacting to the allergen, causing an increase in mucus and, thus, narrowing of the airways. To overcome sleep apnea caused by allergies, one will need to monitor when the problem occurs i.e. is there an increase in pollen, lack of fresh air etc. Nasal sprays can in some cases greatly reduce the effects of allergies.

3. Nasal Strips and Nasal Drops. Snorers who suffer from nasal congestion usually find relief in nasal strips. Nasal strips and septum devices open airway blockages in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Nasal drops reduce nasal secretions, effectively widening the nasal passages.

4. The Pillar System. The Pillar System has three small polyester inserts which harden and support the throat palate. This reduces vibration and, as a result, snoring. This is the same as the Palatal Restoration Procedure. As with any therapy that invades the body, some people find this procedure uncomfortable and cumbersome.

5. Use of Aromatic Oils. The use of aromatic oils can be effective. Some are sold with a jet diffuser which helps disperse the oil into a fine mist thus allowing the aerosolized oil to work its way deeper into your airways. They can also be effective when a few drops are applied to ones neck or nose.

6. Smoking and Alcohol. In one sentence, smoking is a no-no. Smoking is a stimulant which can cause your brain cells to over-react. Some people are so sensitive that having a smoke before bed causes insomnia. A major cause of snoring is alcohol. Too much alcohol has the effect of relaxing the muscles in the human body, including all the soft tissues of the mouth and throat thus causing one to snore. 

7.  Overweight or Obese.  People who are overweight, especially around the region of the neck, have an increased risk of sleep apnea. Losing weight and a regular and healthy diet and exercise can help a person sleep more soundly which also leads to less snoring.

As seen there are many ways to overcome Sleep Apnea, but there are many more causes and cures. Whilst most snoring is benign, very severe snoring can lead to serious sleeping disorders.

Snoring Relief and Sleep Apnea

Generally, snoring is most common in men than women. Overweight people show more tendencies to snore than those within normal weight. Age appears to aggravate the situation as well.

With this disturbing condition, a lot of companies have designed devices that are said to cure snoring. About 300 devices or more are already registered in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Some of these evolve from a traditional idea in which a tennis ball is put inside a sock that is then sewed to the back of the pajama. Supposedly, this forces the snoring person to sleep on his back, which counters the findings, that snoring become worse if a person lies on his back.

There have indeed been several variations when it comes to snoring devices. Some keep the lower jaw forward, some work on the nasal passage and keep it open, and some even create an unfavorable stimulus as soon as a person snores. However, these devices sometimes do not work primarily because the person who snores cannot control his own snoring nor be aware of it. If these devices have worked for some, it is probably because they disturb the sleep somehow and wakeup the person from time to time.

So what really are the causes of snoring? Basically, the sounds produced while snoring come from the vibration and striking of certain structures at the inner side of the mouth and nose. The inside part of the tongue and the upper throat bump with the uvula and palate thus air cannot flow easily.

Moreover, the quality of the muscles of the tongue and throat has a great impact on snoring. Too much relaxation of the muscles, due to alcohol or sleep-inducing drugs, causes the tongue to linger into the air passageway or the throat to bunch into the airway. Such may also happen if a person has been too tired and has fallen into a really deep sleep.

In addition to these, people with bulky throat tissues also snore. This explains why overweight people are more likely to snore since the tissues of their neck are equally bulky. Children with enlarged tonsils also snore.

Having a long palate that partially blocks the opening from the nose to the throat is also being pointed out as a cause. At it dangles along the passageway, a noise is being produced. If a long uvula pairs up with this condition, snoring becomes worse.

If there are obstructions in the nasal airways, snoring may also be expected. Such makes the uptake of air more difficult and forces together the throat tissues toward the middle. With this, snoring is most rampant during cold seasons in which people are more prone to catching colds and other sinus problems.

While snoring is not as serious as other medical conditions, it has to be given attention as it may lead to further health problems. Normally, the snorer does not get enough sleep and rest because sleep patterns are disturbed. Likewise, severe snoring may lead to other long-term conditions, an example of which is called obstructive sleep apnea that includes episodes of totally blocked breathing.

Should snoring not lead to other serious conditions, the social implications still remain very disturbing and it can negatively affect relationships. It is important that the person consults an otolaryngologist who can examine the nose, mouth, palate, throat, and even neck. Sleep studies in a laboratory may be necessary to further identify the severity of the condition.

The treatment is strongly dependent on what has been diagnosed. As the cause is usually structural in nature, surgery is often suggested. However, those who find surgery risky prefer to just sleep every night wearing a nasal mask that is supposed to cause air pressure into the throat that is referred to as continuous positive airway pressure.

Furthermore, there are simple ways that a person can do to somehow prevent this condition. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is one as it tones the muscles and keeps weight within the normal level. Conditioning oneself to a regular sleeping pattern can also help as well as not taking alcohol or leep-inducing drugs right before going to sleep.

Indeed, a good understanding of this condition will help a person deal with the situation better.
